Athletes who thrive out in the open air will certainly find a friend in EasyTrails GPS, an iPhone application designed for outdoor athletes looking to trace their tracks and record their stats.

No matter the activity, EasyTrails GPS from Zirak S.R.L., promises to make it a “unique and easier experience.” Here’s how it works. EasyTrails GPS is built to provide you with relevant data that matters to you as an athlete. If you go for a jog, the app will record how fast, how far, and long you jogged for. You can even log your records and, best of all, view your trails from a perspective that resembles a satellite view.

Getting started really couldn’t be easier:

• Establish your “waypoints” or points of interest.
• Then view the direction and the distance to a target point of interest.
• If you prefer, you can receive an audio alert when you approach a designated point.

After tinkering with the app for only a short while, it was still easy to understand why EasyTrails GPS won the 2009 award for Best Outdoor Use App.

I was pleased with the attractive user interface and navigation is simple enough to use at rest or while at play. I haven’t tried using it while skiing, for example, but the app is tailored to folks who are fond of trekking, running, skiing, sailing, traveling or “just wandering around.” Of course, the app doesn’t require much of any hands-on involvement during your physical activity, so there are no distractions to throw you off and potentially risk injury.

And in case you’re worried about battery life, the app will record your activities while your iPhone is on standby. In fact, it works like a charm in this fashion. And that’s a welcome factor given how athletes try to preserve their own batteries let alone their cell phone batteries while out for a long day of physical activity.

EasyTrails GPS is a very cool application that truly serves up happier trails in all sorts of ways.

EasyTrails GPS requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible only with iPhone.

 REVIEW—”RunKeeper, Nike totally had this idea first”

So is the way it goes in almost any business economy. You come out with one product and almost immediately you have a competitor. Really, some people don’t even have a fully developed prototype before a competitor is on the horizon. The same holds true for RunKeeper.

If I do recall correctly, Apple, Inc. and Nike merged to bring runners the Nike + iPod special, and RunKeeper is trying to up the ante. With RunKeeper, users can monitor speed, distance, pace, time, ya know the usual. However, on this particular application users can see they path they have traveled on a virtual map. Okay, 1 point RunKeeper.

It really is easy to navigate. Simply press start when you are ready to begin your run, hit stop when you’ve completed your run and RunKeeper formulates the rest. As is becoming the norm, RunKeeper as merged with social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. RunKeeper is also ad run which means you get those annoying little advertisements that pop up all time. 1 point for Apple, Inc. However, it is nice to not have to invest in more than one device. RunKeeper is free and the Nike + iPod kit was certainly not. And while Nike shoes were not necessarily required for the devices to work effectively, it was certainly more convenient that way, which does set users back a sufficient about.

At this point, I’d say the score is Apple 1, RunKeeper 4. I guess that’s the beauty of competition, being first might grant you some props on originality, but it’s ultimately about the overall execution of a product. RunKeeper is certainly an app that I’ve been using and will continue to use. Perhaps it’s the technology geek within me but I really the idea of a GPS on my person navigating my way through the ends and outs of a rustic trail in nature. Sound fabulous? Don’t be jealous. Get to downloading and try it out.

For the most part, I’ve been disappointed with iPhone fitness applications. I’m not talking about Nike+ but rather the third party apps found in the Health & Fitness section of the App Store.

Apps that track your routes tend to be battery-killers (not really their fault, more due to the way the SDK insists they work). The ones that create exercise playlists depend on time-exhausting Mac-based solutions that have to analyze your iTunes tracks for their beats-per-minutes, creating a heavy investment with a minimal payoff. Genius on the iPhone does a decent job, without that time commitment.

I don’t quite get the food and exercise logging apps — I find that it’s simpler to do all that on my primary Mac, using a physical notebook (you know: paper, pen, old tech) when I’m on the go. As for the stretching and exercise guides, I find them awkward. I’d rather use a DVD or a Wii-based game (I adore Gold Gym’s Cardio Boxing, for example) where I don’t have to keep referring to a 4-inch screen all the time and the sound is clear, and the instructions are easier to follow.

So what am I missing here? What are the really good iPhone-based fitness apps? I feel like all the ones I’ve tried just keep missing the point: to make exercise better or funner([TM] Apple). Yes, they make exercise more portable, but do they provide a better win over Nike+, a bike computer or a garmin?

Please do chime in in the comments. Let me know what iPhone Apps I have been missing, and which ones will improve my exercise experience, whether in the home or on the jogging path. Surely, there have to be some winners out there, and I’d love to hear about which apps are working for you, and why.
