The iTunes App Store is chock full of options.  No matter what you’re looking for, there truly is an app for that.  And, with so many developers creating similar apps, all trying to fill the same needs, their greatest task is to attract attention, making their product the one you simply cannot function without.  For those who are truly confident in what their product has to offer, the ideal (and easiest) way to attract new buyers is to offer a free sampling.

HiBye Free by shani hajbi, like its paid version ($0.99), is designed to help you organize your temporary contacts list so you do not accidentally delete important phone numbers from your already jumbled call list, allowing users to save numbers they may need to reference later, complete with timer and note functions.

With the timer function, users can add a temporary contact to their list, setting a specific expiration date for that contact.  This will ensure that these mainly extraneous phone numbers, email address and various other bits of information will not remain on your list too long and clutter the rest of your official contact list because, conveniently, HiBye Free syncs directly with the rest of your contacts.  When the life span of the contact is just about up, the timer will alert you so you can choose to permanently delete the contact or extend its life span.

Upon startup, users will see that the main screen is also the ‘Contacts’ tab, where they can find the list of all those temporary contacts they have added.  This is also the very place they can add more contacts to their list by using the ‘+’ icon in the top right corner.  When entering a new contact, users can enter the same types of information they normally do under the general contacts list on their device.  HiBye Free recommends adding a note so you always remember exactly why a given contact was saved to your temporary list.

In the top left corner, users will find the ‘Settings’ button.  Here, users can set their timer specifications.  With HiBye Free, users can only assign a timer of up to a week, while they can save a contact for up to a year with the full version.  However, this gives users a nice taste of HiBye’s capabilities.  Users may also enable the HiBye Dummy, which shows up in your regular contacts list.  Using the dummy, users can enter temporary contact information right from their contacts list, never having to launch HiBye Free to do so.

When contacts are about to expire, users will find their information under the ‘TimeOut’ tab, where they will be able determine the contact’s fate.  HiBye Free suits the iPhone user best because iPod Touch users would need to juggle two devices to maximize the app’s usefulness, inputting the information manually instead of extracting it directly from your log.

Users may access all these conveniences within the paid application, as well as advanced services including: setting the timer for up to one year; archiving your contacts with the ability to restore them with one click; creating custom contact categories.  However, HiBye Free does a great job of supplementing the main characteristic of the paid version, while dangling the appealing traits of the full version within a tempting distance of the consumer’s nose.

Ok, so maybe hotly anticipated is a little overstated for most people. But very understated for task management nerds like myself. OmniFocus for the iPad has finally made it’s way into the App Store and I couldn’t be happier! This amazingly detailed task management application has been my most anticipated iPad application since the announcement of the iPad.

OmniFocus is a powerhouse of a task manager. Providing great organization tools if you have lots of things going all the time like I seem to. The ability to quickly capture thoughts, ideas, and tasks and then organize them, track them, and now review them while on the go is invaluable.

This release of OmniFocus is a hybrid of sorts. Bringing more of the features of the desktop to the app than what we have with the iPhone version, while still focusing on what you need to help you get things done while mobile. The iPad version is focused on helping you capture information with it’s quick entry system, define that information once you have it, and then, of course, get it done.

Two big additions to the iPad version are the Forecast and Review features. Forecast lets you see, with a quick touch, exactly what you need to be doing and where you need to be today. You can also take a look ahead and see what’s coming later in the week. The Review feature is great for being able to do a quick check-in on all of your projects, figure out where they are going, and then update their status. Think of it as a quick-fire rapid card deck of your projects with you tapping yes or no on each one as they flip into view.

One of the things that sets OmniFocus apart from it’s competitors is the rock-solid syncing. Now with the addition of the iPad version you have three-way sync from your desktop, to your mobile phone, and to your iPad. You can keep all three in sync all the time, even when traveling.

OmniFocus for the iPad is available now, in the App Store, for $39.99. Some will consider this expensive, I consider it a huge value for all of the time it saves me.

Campfire, the project collaboration application with real time chat designed for private groups where members can share files, text, code and more (think of it as a more powerful IRC client), can now be found on the App Store as an official application by 37signals due to a takeover of Ember, the third-party application developer of Campfire. Ember, as it was then known, was originally priced at $9.99, but developers 37signals saw an opportunity which allowed them to “work out a deal [with Ember and make] a few changes to the app” according to the official blog. As of July 26th, the application has rebranded and re-released with a new price tag: rather, no price tag at all. It’s free to download from the iTunes App Store.

Although the application itself is free, a Campfire account is not. The basic package allows up to 12 chatters and 1GB of storage for $12 a month, and for $24 a month you can upgrade that to 25 chatters, 3GB of storage as well as 500 conference call minutes and enhanced security over the Basic package. A free 30-day trial is available on all accounts.

37signals continues to become a prominent player in the business network, having released other popular applications and clients that allow more professional social networking to take place. Review – “A great guide for nurses that is truly pocket sized!”

There are good things and bad things about electronic references. The good thing about them is the fact that you can have a virtually limitless amount of information packed into a very small device. The problem with them tends to be that the more information you pack in, the more difficult they become to navigate. Informed Publishing has addressed this by integrating great information with a simple interactive interface!

When you open up the RN Pocket Guide you’ll see a small menu bar at the bottom of the screen with four buttons. The button on the left of this menu will bring up a list of all the topics that are covered within this app. There are all kinds of topics covered from Cardiac and Respiratory down to Mental Health and Gastrointestinal.

When you find the topic that you need information on, touching it will bring up a list of articles to read. What really makes this app great though is that the information itself is interactive. If the article you’re reading mentions a test that you might want to perform it will give you a link to that test within the app, or if it references a phone number it will give you a link to dial that phone number directly.

Besides the articles full of information, this app also offers a variety of different medical calculators. You can access the full list of them by touching the “Calculators” button at the bottom of the screen. Many of them are also available from within various information in the “Topics” section as well.

Another great feature of this app is the “Search/Bookmarks” feature. Anytime you find and are reading an article that you think you might need later, you can add a bookmark to it by touching the “+” button at the bottom of the screen. You can then access your list of bookmarks either from the main menu or by touching the bookmark button from within an article.

You can switch from bookmarks to the search feature by touching the icon in the upper right corner of the screen. As you type information into the search bar you’ll see live updates of information below. Touching any of the articles that pop up will take you straight to them. This makes it extremely easy to quickly find information on a particular topic. No hunting through topics and subtopics, just type one good key word and head there directly!

If you’re a nurse and you have or used to carry a pocket guide of some sort, this is an app that you should definitely check out. TaskPaper is the most open and customizable notes/projects application that I’ve seen. The time spent learning how to use it is time well spent.

What TaskPaper aims to do is streamline your ideas, without getting rid of any. How does it do this? With three sections to a new list (in other words, a new document): projects, tasks and notes. You can create tasks within projects, notes within tasks, notes within notes and all of the combinations in between. TaskPaper is built openly because your thoughts are too.

The best way to explain this simply is with an example. Let’s say you have a new project of writing a paper on the variety and diversity of iPhone applications. We’ll call the project “App Store Thesis”. Next up, outline the tasks that you need to complete. In this case, finding out how many applications are in each category would be a good place to start. Now it would be wise to create a note under this task saying where you’re going to get this data from (we recommend 148Apps.biz). Wherever you go after this is entirely up to you. You could create a new task called “Games Categories” within the task above to outline exactly how many games are in each category of the App Store. The screenshot to the right outlines this example.

All actions can be custom tagged with the @ symbol. If you mark something as @done, a line will streak across that point. You can create custom tags for whatever purpose you need.

Now that we’ve covered how it works, let’s see how it’s done. Tapping the plus (+) button at the top right of the home screen of TaskPaper will create a new list. By default, it starts off with a new project. If you want to change this to a task or note, tap return. Whenever nothing is written on a line, tapping return will change the format to project, note or task. If a line does have text on it, tapping return will give you a new line. The project’s font is big and bold, whereas tasks and notes are of normal size. To identify what are tasks and what are notes, look for the bullet point – only tasks will have them. Once you’ve typed in what you want, tapping return will give you a new line with an indent. To indent further, tap space once. Likewise, to remove an indent, tap delete once. From hereon, you roll as your brain moves. There are no limitations to a thought or idea, because no matter how correlated (or not) it is to another idea, there always be a place for it.

Whenever you are inside a list, there are a number of features to make use of. Firstly, an internal search that allows you search within that specific list. Along the bottom menu bar, the icon at the far left allows you to jump to a specific project within that list. The @ icon allows you to streamline search results with certain tags. For example, @done would filter your entire list down to only lines that have been marked as @done. The magnifying glass acts as an ability to search also, in case you’ve scrolled down and can no longer see the search bar up at the top of the screen. Finally, the far right icon is an options category that allows you move selected lines to a different project, cut/copy/paste and a number of other minor features. For a full list, see the screenshots attached.

Tip: for a faster way to move single lines, tap and hold them. They’ll turn into a single blue line with a circle on the left hand side, and from there you can just move it to wherever you want to. To edit what is written on a line, double tap.

The home screen of TaskPaper is relatively streamlined. The top left button opens up to provide options to: sync, lock and unlock orientation (a welcome addition for iPhone 3G users), start Wi-Fi sharing and adjust settings. There’s a help guide in there too. By heading over to www.simpletext.ws you can log in with your Google ID and see all of your lists. You can also create lists here too. Note: the developer stresses that security is light for online syncing – most evident by the fact that the login page is not HTTP secure (https). Thankfully, the code is fully open-source, meaning you can load it onto your own website. See here for more details.

Additionally, there is a local network sync option. TaskPaper will give you an IP which you can connect through any web browser, and all your documents will be there for viewing and editing. The only downside is that there is no export option, meaning you’ll have to manually copy and paste it onto your desktop if you want an offline copy on your PC or Mac.

The settings menu reveals a number of additional options. There are six different ways to sort documents (see screenshots for a full list); you can add a start-up password for security and you can write down the tags you use frequently so that it’s just a matter of taps to insert a tag, rather than to type it out manually.

The application is universal, meaning it is optimized for the iPad as well as the iPhone. Like other productivity applications, the iPad’s larger screen makes projects and note-making significantly easier.

The interface for the iPad features two fixed, scrollable columns when viewed in landscape mode. On the left, a summary list of all the documents you’ve created and on the right are the documents themselves. On portrait mode the design is a little more intuitive, with a list of documents presented in the centre of the screen in a somewhat-transparent box (allowing you to see content written behind it). Disappointingly, there is still no way to search in all the documents, rather you can only search each individual one.

So where does it fall short? Well, the option to collapse a project is a missing – a feature that could both simplify and streamline lists even further. The keyboard often gets in the way of editing a list – I found that whenever I went to edit a line at the bottom of the screen it would select a different line whenever the keyboard popped up. Lastly, an option for a dark theme wouldn’t go amiss.

TaskPaper really does follow’s Apple’s motto of Think Different. The application is so open yet feels easy and comfortable to use, especially for big ideas. It’s a drawing board for every thought in your head. It’s unconventional, imaginative and streamlined. And that’s impressive.

World Flights ($1.99)

Review – “Get the latest updates on your flights!”

If you travel a lot by plane you know it can be confusing sometimes trying to keep track of when planes are arriving and departing sometimes. Flights get delayed all the time, and even if it’s only a few minutes that could make a huge difference to you! Whether you’re just curious, or you really need to know, World Flights for iPhone will allow you to find out the latest flight information from anywhere!

The first thing you see when you open up this app is a screen with a map. If you allow the app to use your current position it will find the closest airport to your current position. to view information about that airport just touch the little arrow button next to the airport’s name. You’ll be taken to a screen where you can choose to view both international and domestic flights and flight schedules.

At the bottom of the airport information screen you’ll see two buttons. On the left side is a button that will give you directions to that airport. This button will launch Google Maps, and using you current alocation, give you detailed directions to the airport you are viewing. The second button on the right will give you the current weather, as observed at the airport you are viewing.

When you go to check out the flight information from this menu it’s divided into departures and arrivals. On the overview screen you’ll see everything from whether the flight is on schedule to it’s flight number and estimated time of arrival/departure. Touching any flight while you are viewing a list of them will take you to a detailed page of information on the specific flight.

So what if you’re not interested in flights from/to your local airport? All you have to do is go back to the main menu and touch the “Airport Search” button below the map on the left. This will allow you to look up any airport by country/state/city or by it’s unique airport code. If you go through a lot of the same airports regularly, you can also add them to your favorites list by touching the button in the upper right corner of the screen from the airport’s main menu!

While there are not a lot of “frills” in this app, I was very impressed with how easy it was to navigate. I did notice a few small bugs that the developers need to sharpen up. For example, there seems to be some small “caching” problems when you go back to view a flight schedule that you have opened up recently. However, the few times this did happen, restarting the app seemed to fix it immediately. I also noticed that not every airport has weather information available. With that said, I don’t think a lot of people are going to be using an app like this to check the weather so this will definitely not be a deal-breaker for most people.

Besides these relatively minor problems, this app can be extremely useful. It is a whole lot quicker to pull out your iPhone and use this app than it is to find similar information on the airline websites, and for business travelers this app will be well worth the money! I’ve seen remote-desktop apps before—take VNC, for example—that allow you to control your computer from your iPhone / iPad / etc. This is the first time, however, that I’ve seen it done in the reverse. myPhoneDesktop is an app / desktop program combo that uses your computer to send data to your iPhone. (You don’t control your iPhone, mind.) While its uses are limited, it’s still a highly functional program.

myPhoneDesktop requires two things. First, you need the app on your iPhone. Then, you must use either the web interface or the desktop program (a free, simple program available for Mac, PC, and Linux). Now you can send data to your iPhone.

myPhoneDesktop allows you to transmit four types of data: Phone, URL, Text, and Image. In the Phone screen, you can either dial a number or enter a SMS. With URL, you can copy-and-paste a web URL, which myPhoneDesktop can open in Safari, display in the app, or copy to the clipboard. Text can also be added to the iPhone clipboard, or simply shown on-screen. Finally, Image allows you to show, copy, or save an image from your computer’s hard drive to your iPhone’s Camera Roll.

So, to recap: do something on your computer, and your iPhone will follow instructions. Once the data appears in-app, you can also do things like assigning pictures to a Contact, emailing it, or finding an address with Google Maps.

Everything works wonderfully; transfer of information from computer to iPhone occurs quickly and painlessly. However, myPhoneDesktop isn’t an app most would use every day. As an iPod Touch + PC user, sure, I find it useful to be able to add images to my photo library (finally!) without using iTunes’ awful photo-sync process. (You can still only transfer one photo at a time.) But what about the rest? Why would you need to copy large chunks of text to your iPhone, if you have your computer on-hand? If you need myPhoneDesktop, it just proves that Apple has failed in some aspect.

Still, myPhoneDesktop does what it sets out to do. If this sounds like something you need—myPhoneDesktop works. It’s just not for everyone.

SimpleNote is a minimalist, straightforward and synchronized notes application that simplifies the note making process. This is, in fact, a euphemism. The note making process is as simple as Apple’s Notes application, but offers the feature of online syncing. For free. It is ad-supported with the ability to buy a premium twelve month subscription.

On the home screen there is little to distract you from content. There are only two buttons – options and add a new note, along with a search bar. The options list contains a plethora of minor features, including: the ability to change the sort order of notes (modified, created or alphabetical); preview lines (anywhere from zero to five) and orientation lock. The latter function is a welcome addition to iPhone 3G users who do not have the ability to use iOS4’s orientation lock feature.

The major advantage of SimpleNote is its ability to sync online. Syncing works both ways – meaning you can create a note online and it’ll update on your iDevice, as well as vice versa. Creating an account is free and simple – like the application itself.

Within the application, you can buy twelve months premium access for $8.99. This offers a number of additional features, including: the ability to disable ads; automatic backups rather than manual syncing; and the ability to create personal RSS feed for your notes. Is SimpleNote too simple? You can’t format text, create lists or do just about anything else that other clients offer. Its greatest short-term advantage is, perhaps, its greatest long-term flaw if you need even just a little bit of customization. On the other hand, if text is the focal point of your notes, you can’t get much simpler than SimpleNote.

Review – “Navigate your music library with ease!”

While Apple has added a considerable amount of search functionality to the iPhone through OS updates, it could definitely be better when it comes to the iPod app. If you’ve got a particularly large music library you’ve probably wished for a way to find songs using multiple filters (author, title, genre, etc.). Well wish no more, because SmartPlaylist does just that and more!

The best thing about this app is that it offers lots of flexibility without being confusing. When you open up SmartPlaylist all you have to do to create a new playlist is enter some information into the filters and touch the generate list button in the lower right corner of the screen. It will take a few seconds for the app to generate a list of songs and then you’ll be taken directly into the newly generated playlist. It’s that simple!

You can also set up multiple playlist filters in this app as well. At the top of the screen are 6 letters. Each one represents a totally separate set of playlist filters. Touching any of them will take you to that particularly set of playlist settings.

Not only can you create 6 different playlist filters but you can save any group of settings to load at a later time by touching the button in the lower left corner of the screen and selecting “Save current rules.” I found that both the load rules and save rules commands work very quickly and do exactly as you would expect.

There are a few other settings that you can set up from the settings menu in the lower left corner of the screen. If you touch the “Settings” button you’ll be given the option to set the color scheme, decide whether your playlists should repeat when they are finished, and even show a badge number on the app that represents how many songs there are in your current playlist.

The search engine in this app is very powerful. One feature that is extremely nice in this app is that you have the ability to use operators, such as AND, OR and NOT. This allows you to be very precise in your searches by including and excluding various search terms. You can also enter in just part of a word and it will search for all related words that have that section of text in their words (ex. “alter” search term will return all “alternative” songs).

If you have a pretty large music library this is one app that you really don’t want to miss, especially since it’s only $1.99. It makes creating a playlist so simple you’ll wonder how you ever found the right music before SmartPlaylist. So what are you waiting for? Check it out in the App Store today!

Looking for a way to make a tough decision, but not quite ready to resort to the Magic 8 Ball yet? Pros and Cons may be the answer to your dilemma.

When it comes to really serious issues, I’ve found that listening to my gut works better than a statistical analysis of the positives and negatives involved. However, for some problems a nice, unbiased assessment is a good idea. McLeran Consulting LLC have come up with a super simple, easy to use app to help you figure out the best decision based on fact.

Open Pros and Cons and you’ll find four simple icons at the bottom of the screen; a plus sign, a minus sign, an up arrow and an equals sign. The top window is labeled “Action.” Type a name for your decision in that field, such as “move to New York.” Tap the plus sign to enter a pro, like “better job,” and give it a rating on a scale of one to ten (ten being the best). Tap the negative sign to enter a con, like “expensive rent,” and rate that as well.

If you exit the app, your entries will disappear, but tapping the up arrow retrieves them. When you’ve entered and rated all the pros and cons you can think of, tap the equal sign. Pros and Cons will generate either a large plus or negative sign to let you know if the pros outweigh the cons, or vice versa. If you’re dead even, you’ll get a question mark, leaving you to seek help outside of your iPhone to make your decision.

I know this app had a few bugs in the last version, but I had absolutely no problem with the back button or any other feature. Tapping the up arrow or the X next to “Action” could potentially erase your information, but you must confirm it through a pop up message before that happens. If you need some objective perspective on a problem, download Pros and Cons and give it a try.

Pros and Cons requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.

I’ve reviewed quite a few list apps since starting with 148Apps. It hasn’t been on purpose, by any means. I don’t even make many lists. I just seem to gravitate towards these kinds of apps for some reason. I’ve made the statement before in reviews that if I would be using a list app, it would be this app, or that app. Yet, here I am, not using a list app at all.

That was before I realized the greatness of Acme Lists. The greatness I speak of isn’t in the bells and whistles, the time stamping and organizing of data, the categorizing of lists by importance, type, smell, sound… etc that other similar apps flaunt as their selling point. The greatness of Acme Lists is in the simplistic design and ease of use, the quick input of lists and the quick deletion of finished objectives. No tracking, no breakdowns, no graphs, just pure list making bliss.

The interface for Acme lists is fairly straight forward. Three tabs along the bottom of the screen separate out the list making, the settings page, and a comprehensive help page. With one click on the list page, a list can be viewed, added to, or deleted. With another click entire new lists can be created. Picked up those diapers at the corner store? You can delete the item all together or simply red line it through until the next shopping list, where it becomes necessary again.

Acme Lists isn’t without its own arsenal of bells and whistles though. A web server allows for remote editing of lists through a PC as long as both devices are on the same wi-fi connection. So your wife can upload your daily honeydo list before you ever wake up in the morning. Once you check the app, you’ll have a brand spanking new list of items to complete. Additionally, if your wife or husband has their own iDevice, the two devices can share lists over Bluetooth or wifi. So if you got the eggs and milk but he got the chicken and beef, your lists will be updated accordingly once connected.

The help page is extremely comprehensive, providing step by step instructions for each section, general information, and options to rate and share the app. If you’re looking for a simple yet useful list app, Acme Lists is a hard one to pass up. At $0.99, it’s a safe investment to see if it fits your needs. Now if you’ll excuse me, my shopping list needs completed.

MindNode is an easy-to-use, functional mind-mapping application built for both iPhone and iPad. It allows you to express your thoughts and ideas on what is a popular brainstorming tool. Although constrained by the iPhone’s 3.5″ screen (this problem is removed with an iPad), MindNode works well and makes use of all the space available.

MindNode automatically creates new branches whenever you tap the “+” icon, but if you hold and drag this icon you can create your own custom lines by length and direction. From hereon, your mind map is limited only to what your thoughts and ideas are. Each branch can have as many sub-branches as you like. You aren’t constrained by one single main node either – you can add as many as you like.

In addition, branches are colour-coded by default, with an option to choose custom colours for each branch at the time of creation. The text sits neatly on top of branches, in a simple yet effective font. Branches can be reorganized (see comparison screenshot below) by tapping on the main node – where everything stems from – and then tapping on the ’send to’ button in the menu bar. You can also view the mind map in list format, with a search present.

MindNode also offers a number of sharing facilities. You can e-mail a specific mind map as a MindNode document, a FreeMind document, a PNG image, a text outline or an OPML outline. The sharing isn’t just limited one way, though. If you have MindNode Pro installed on your Mac, you can transfer files from there to your iPhone. Or, if you don’t have MindNode Pro, you can navigate to a local IP with a specified username and password (MindNode supplies everything) where you can upload FreeMind and OPML documents and download everything from your iDevice.

MindNode excels at creation, but editing is a different matter. There’s no undo/redo button, which means if you accidentally delete a branch (guilty) you’ll have to rebuild it in its entirety; cut / copy / paste is yet to be implemented; and branches cannot be connected to separate branches. Thankfully, these points are somewhat minor from a developer’s point of view – meaning an update can sort it all out. The only other problem I faced was editing a mind map’s title. Unless it’s the first you edit whenever you’ve created a new mind map, it’ll stay named as “Mind Map” – changing the title only changes the title inside the mind map itself.

The creation and sharing of documents by MindNode is swift and simple. The application, even with fairly large mind maps, was quick to respond to the actions inputted on an iPhone 3G. At $5.99, as a universal application, it’s also priced respectively amongst its peers.

The idea behind this to-do list app is fantastic – rather than reminding you of what you need to do at a certain time, it reminds you based on your location. Unfortunately, Toogo didn’t quite work for me the way it was supposed to.

Designed by Ben Nelson, the concept is really great. Enter an item on your to-do list, such as “drop off library books,” and instead of putting in the due date, you find your library on the map, and the app will remind you to drop off the books when you’re in a certain radius (1/2 a mile to 10 miles) of the library.

There are two ways to enter the location – you can drag and drop the pinpoint on the map when you add a new task (the pinpoint is automatically dropped on your current location), or you can enter the name or address of the location in the search box and find it on a Google search list.

The second way is a bit confusing, simply because you’re on a Google page and at first your only option appears to be either clicking on one of the links to your search results or clicking “Done” at the top. However, there are little stars you can tap to highlight the location before choosing “Done.”

My problem was that, while Toogo immediately identified my location in Seattle, every location I entered by name came up somewhere in France. The same happened when I tried the pinpoint, all except once – the app did find Pike Place Market right away. However, the Space Needle and Seattle Central Library (both of which I identified on the search page and confirmed the correct address) were somehow transplanted to an area west of Paris.

My “get apples” reminder popped up perfectly when I walked by the market, and I really think this is a great way to approach to-do lists. I’m looking forward to seeing future updates, as I’d love to add Toogo to my list of “daily use” apps.

Share Board is a iOS Universal whiteboard sharing App, meaning it’ll work full-size on either the iPad or iPhone (or iPod Touches, obviously), a new and welcome introduction to the App Store, and one feature I think is worth more than the value of the App itself. Universal Apps need only be downloaded once and work perfectly on both platforms – unlike some iPad-Only versions of iPhone Apps, or worse, iPhone Apps that ‘work on’ iPad, but require the 2x Button to be any larger.

So what exactly is a Whiteboard Sharing App anyways? Well, the concept and execution are fairly simple – but very effective. You have a white space, and you fill it with notes, drawings, pictures, whatever you please. I’ll first go over the creating portion, then cover the sharing part.

To start a new White Board, what you’re actually doing is creating a server, or hosted board. Like a Chat Room, if you will. The tools you can use to ‘write on’ your whiteboard are Pen, Marker and Highlighter (or Eraser), you have four colors to choose from for each the marker or pen. You can also import photographs from your photo library. You can also add text (however, it always creates a border with drop-shadow making a whole box, which I found a little annoying – if there’s a setting to turn this bordering off, I couldn’t find it) anywhere on the whiteboard.

As fantastic as a whiteboard App itself on it’s own is (and this one is still pretty great), this one is extra awesome because of the sharable feature. Like I said earlier, when you first create a whiteboard, what you’re creating is the hosting page or server for other users to connect. Once you’re connected you can both edit and see the others edits in real-time, as they draw them. I easily set up a communal whiteboard between my iPhone and iPad and had a bit of fun with it. I bet this would be super-fun in a room with several iPad users.

Sharing and Saving are super-easy. You would not believe the number of Apps out there that don’t let you save your progress on something like this, or more likely, you can save but not continue the same session later. Luckily Share Board lets you do both. From within the board itself you can share by saving to your Photo Library, posting to Facebook or my Email. From within your ‘Saved’ Boards you can also export your whiteboard to your saved photos and from there you can do with it whatever you can manage to do with all photos, email, tweet, Facebook – however these options are not built in in the Saved Section. However, if you open your Saves and ‘Continue’ Work on them you can once again (from within the editor) share via all of the methods mentioned above.

Other than that one quibble, this is a great App – if you need a platform to share ideas and whiteboard-like notes, I highly recommend it!

I’m about to release top-secret details regarding secrets that have existed since the evolutionary behariorial processes in men and women resulted in marriage. The fraternal order I’m speaking of is the unwritten laws which govern married men. Most aren’t consciously aware of these rules, but subconsciously adhere to them in rigid fashion, nonetheless.

So, in the interest of fairness and integrity, I’m putting myself at tremendous risk by reviewing Honey Do (voluntarily, mind you), thus exposing decades-old secrets, while simultaneously risking my Home and Garden-free life, as well as well as my freedom from DIY/home projects.

That said, I’m not perfect and have certainly done some pretty stupid things in my life. Nothing, however, compares to this: Giving my wife a free pass to build Honey Do lists for me. I’m essentially taking one for the collective team, in the interest of maintaining our reviewing standards and integrity.

Now, before I start my review, I need to establish a couple of specific, unwritten rules all married men follow (or should follow): First, married men NEVER utter the words Honey Do; together or separate, i.e. bees make a sweet, amber liquid and “do” is always replaced with perform.

There are also certain sociological rules surrounding the infamous Honey Do list. For example, married men are generally prohibited from saying these words (together or separate) in front of their wives and/or other women, for fear of planting ideas into their heads. Also, married men generally never mention Honey Do lists in front of their other married, male friends, as this may expose the married man to ridicule and embarrassment and his integrity as a dominant male will be questioned.

That established, Honey Do is an iPhone application that allows couples, or even groups of people (providing they all have iPhones with the app installed) to create to-do lists/projects, assign created tasks and duties and track the progress of these tasks (and hence the progress of the project) in real time. Lists/tasks have editable due dates and messaging capabilities which allow all users to interact with each other, as well as the elements of the project/list.

Here’s how HoneyDo works: Users create a free account using their email address. Once a user has an account, he/she can create a Group (which can be a project involving a series of tasks or a simple individual task), or join a Group, providing they have the necessary information (in this case, a code generated by the app from another user).

Once a Group is created, Honey Do allows you to invite others to join your group by sending an automatically-generated email to others you want to join your group. Hence, Honey Do is more than just a simple way to track Honey Do’s: its a powerful project management tool which allows users to create and track (simple/complex) projects.

Once a user creates a Group, the first Do (task) prompts on screen, allowing the user to enter a task, as well as information regarding the task, such as its name, i.e. what it is, who it’s assigned to, when it’s due, etc.

Once a task is created, its individual screen displays, among other things, the task’s due date and a countdown timer, showing how many hours are remaining to complete the task. When entering a task, users have the option of assigning the task to a user within the group and assigning one of several pre-defined rewards when the task is completed, such as money, love, a beer, etc. Conversely, users can also assign consequences to those failing to complete a task, i.e. payback and doghouse. A future feature I would like to see is the ability to edit these and create personalized rewards/consequences. This is really the only flaw (if you can call it that) I could find with the program. Once done entering the task information, simply hit Send and the task is created and sent to each member of the group, in the form of an on-screen alert and on-screen icon.

All assigned tasks are viewable and can be edited on the user’s task page. This page displays all tasks (based on/by assignment), shows whether they are completed or not and allows the user to create a new task. Users also have the option of sending an in-app text to whomever assigned the task, reject the task (oooooohhhhhh) and even integrate the task with your calendar.

Once a task is completed, the user checks the task’s checkbox and the host or user who created the task is alerted in real time. Conversely, when a task is created, those users assigned to the group will be alerted to the task, again, in real time.

My wife and I used Honey Do for a couple of weeks, giving it a thorough, solid assessment and not only did it never disappoint, we continue to use it. It allows us to keep in touch and efficiently collaborate on all aspects of running our household.

That said, I have to say, I am very impressed with Honey Do, both in its functionality and ease of use. More than just a Honey Do list, it’s a surprisingly powerful project management tool which allows multiple users to collaborate, coordinate and communicate in real time.

Admittedly, however, I found it somewhat surprising the developers limited the app’s marketability by naming it Honey Do, considering the app’s functionality and it’s project-management capabilities.

Honey Do’s GUI is also surprisingly linear and straightforward, considering everything it does. If you like or use to-do lists or are looking for an iPhone project management tool for use with other iPhone users, I strongly recommend Honey Do. Just make sure you don’t call the other users Honey, unless you enjoy demonstrating a flagrant disregard for decades of well-established rules.
